American Roots

The two major reasons Europeans immigrated to the United States were for religious freedom and economic opportunity.

European governments throughout the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s believed uniformity of religion was needed for a society to thrive. To escape religious persecution, Europeans left in droves for America.

Poverty, famine, and hope for a better life also drove Europeans to make the 6-week trip by ship to America.

The Moore family roots in America can be traced to the 1600s and 1700s.

MOORE

We have no record of when the Moore paternal lineage began in America. However, we have records of when the maternal family of Birdie McCowen Vandergriff, wife of John Hardin Moore, immigrated to America, it was sometime in the early 1600s.

Ancestry.com records indicate, Reverend John Sion Meyrick was born 1579 in Wales and died 1650 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. (Rev. Meyrick is Al’s 9th great grandfather.)

LOVE

According to research done by Kirk G. Taylor (Marty Hederman book), part of the Love family came to America when William Penn settled Pennsylvania in the late 1600s.

Records on Ancestry.com indicate Robert Love was born 1715 in Ballymoney, Ireland and died 1786 in Kershaw, South Carolina. (Robert is Al’s 5th great grandfather.)

On the maternal side, Christian Heidelberg was born in Germany about 1690. By 1720, Christian was living in North Carolina. (Christian is Al’s 6th great grandfather.)

COFFEY

The Coffey family has strong roots in Ireland. Anecestry.com records indicate Hugh Coffee was born 1700 in Ireland. He died living in Augusta, Virginia in 1766. (Hugh is Glenna’s 5th great grandfather.)

SANDERS

The oldest paternal Sanders found on Ancestry.com is from Virginia. John Sanders was born 1625 in modern day Hampton, VA and died 1733 in New River, North Carolina. (John is Glenna’s 6th great grandfather.)

The Sanders maternal family lineage to America is through Captain James Wells. Capt. Wells was born 1648 in England. He died 1682 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Capt. Wells is Glenna’s 6th great grandfather.)
