European Roots

Using family tree records maintained by people on Ancestry.com, I was able to trace much of our direct paternal lineage to Europe. Where I couldn’t find a direct paternal lineage to Europe, I looked for maternal lineages linking our family roots to Europe.

(This information isn’t 100% accurate. It is based upon unverified records of family trees found on Ancestry.com. I used my best judgment in determining which family trees were more reliable.)

The Moore Family has European roots in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, and Germany.

MOORE

The paternal Moore family records do not go back to Europe. James J. Moore, born 1782 in South Carolina, is the oldest Moore we can trace. (James is Al’s 3rd great grandfather.) James married Pheobe Borders in 1806 and her family can be traced to Germany.

Matthias Matteus Bader Borders was born in 1707 Jettenburg, Germany. (Matthias is Al’s 5th great grandfather.)

Other maternal lines in the Moore family date back to Europe in 1550 and 1415. John Mike Borders Moore, son of James and Pheobe, was married to Sally Magnos Smith and her traceable family line goes back to both England and Wales.

William Pride was born in Southwell, England in 1550. (William is Al’s 10th great grandfather.)

Cadwalader Roberts was born in Ysbyty Ifan, Wales in 1578. (Cadwalader is Al’s 9th great grandfather.)

John Hardin Moore (Al’s grandfather) married Birdie McCowen Vandergriff. Birdie’s maternal family line goes back to Heylin Ap Einion born 1415 in Wales. (Heylin is Al’s 14th great grandfather.)

LOVE

The Love family has deep roots in Ireland dating back to the 1600s and early 1700s.

Digging deeper, it appears Scotland is where the Love family’s European roots are. However, family trees on Ancestry.com reveal the spelling of ‘Love’ may have changed over the generations. William Bishop Luiff, not Love, was born in 1530 in Glasgow, Scotland. (William is Al’s 11th great grandfather.)

COFFEY

Hugh Coffee, notice the spelling difference, is the oldest paternal relative I found with roots in Europe. Hugh Coffee was born in 1700 in Ireland. (Hugh is Glenna’s 5th great grandfather.)

SANDERS

The oldest paternal Sanders found on Ancestry.com is from Virginia. John Sanders was born 1625 in modern day Hampton, VA. (John is Glenna’s 7th great grandfather.)

Maternal family lines reveal Francis D. Dollarhide, Jr. was born 1700 in Ireland. (Francis is Glenna’s 5th great grandfather.) Another maternal Sanders family line tells us Thomas Welles was born 1539 in Essex, England. (Thomas is Glenna’s 10th great grandfather.)
